Model, actress and beauty entrepreneur Piumi Hansamali on Thursday withdrew the writ petition she had filed in the Court of Appeal challenging the legality of a CID investigation into the alleged suspicious acquisition of property.
The matter was taken up for support before a two-judge Bench comprising Justices Mayadunne Corea and Lakmali Karunanayake, the Daily Mirror reported.
Additional Solicitor General Shanil Kularatne, appearing for the Attorney General, told the Court that the CID’s Illegal Assets Investigations Division is conducting an investigation into her assets and is unable to specify a timeframe for concluding it. He said the CID requires sufficient time to complete the probe.
President’s Counsel Ronald Perera, appearing for Hansamali, sought permission to withdraw the petition on the basis that his client had not been arrested. He asked that the withdrawal be allowed while reserving her right to file a fresh application if necessary.
The Bench allowed the withdrawal on those terms.
What this means
The petition challenged the legality of the investigation itself, not any charge — no charges have been reported against Hansamali. Withdrawing it removes the challenge without resolving the underlying question: the investigation continues, with no stated end date, and the reservation of her right to reapply leaves the door open if her position changes.
The trigger for the original application was the prospect of arrest. With no arrest having taken place, the relief sought had, in her counsel’s framing, lost its immediate purpose.
