The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has warned job seekers about a fraudulent online recruitment link circulating on social media, which advertises free employment opportunities in Israel.
The fake website is unlawfully using the Bureau’s name, logo and photographs to present itself as an official SLBFE recruitment platform, the Daily Mirror reported.
What it asks for
Applicants are directed to an online form that requests personal details including name, date of birth, National Identity Card number, gender and telephone number.
The Bureau said the unauthorised collection of that information could lead to phishing, identity theft, impersonation and other misuse of personal data. It urged the public not to enter personal information into suspicious links or unverified online applications.
The SLBFE has lodged a complaint with Sri Lanka CERT, the national computer emergency readiness team, and said action is being taken.
Why Israel jobs are a target
Israel has been the most heavily advertised destination in Sri Lanka’s outbound labour market this year, which makes it the most effective bait for fraud. The Bureau opened a portal for around 16,000 positions in August, and police arrested suspects over an Israel job scam days later. Batches of workers have since departed, including 133 construction workers on 22 September.
The Bureau urged those seeking work in Israel to rely only on official SLBFE announcements for recruitment information. The report does not give the address of the fraudulent site or say how many people may have submitted details to it.
