The Meteorology Department has warned of high waves and possible seawater inundation along nearshore areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle.
Wave heights in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara could rise to between 2.0 and 3.0 metres, the department said, according to the Daily Mirror.
Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as have residents living along the specified coastal stretch.
Context
The marine advisory comes as heavy rain continues to affect large parts of the island. The Disaster Management Centre reported that more than 2,800 people across 15 districts have been affected by the current spell of wet weather, and flood warnings remain in force for the Gin and Nilwala river basins in the south.
The warning covers the same southern and south-western coastline where rainfall has been heaviest, meaning communities there face pressure from both river flooding inland and sea conditions on the coast.
Residents in low-lying coastal areas are advised to move valuables and equipment away from the shoreline, and fishing craft should be secured. Boat operators putting to sea in the affected areas should check the latest advisory before departure, as the department updates its marine bulletins through the day.
