The body of a 21-year-old man has been recovered from an abandoned well in the Ihala Kumbukkollewa area of Horowpothana, in the Anuradhapura district, with injuries visible on the body.
Horowpothana Police are investigating. The body was taken to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination, NewsFirst reported. The dead man was a resident of the same area.
How he was found
Hiru News reported that the man had gone out to herd cattle with his sister two days before the body was found. During the outing he handed firewood to his sister and left, saying he would return later.
When he did not come home, a search was mounted. It ended at the abandoned well, where his body was found.
Where the two accounts differ
The two newsrooms covering the death do not agree on two points that matter to the investigation.

Only Hiru names the dead man, giving it as Ameerdeen Mulawpar Zahran. NewsFirst does not identify him, and no other newsroom has published a name. The two outlets also spell the village differently — NewsFirst gives “Ihala Kumbukkollewa”, Hiru “Ihala Kumbukgollewawa”.
Whether the death is being treated as a homicide therefore rests on a single outlet’s characterisation. Police have not said so directly in either report.
