The Samagi Jana Balawegaya is considering bringing a no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, the party’s General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara has said.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Madduma Bandara confirmed the party is contemplating the move and said any motion would be submitted “at an appropriate time”, the paper reported.
He did not say when the motion would be formally handed over to Parliament, and did not set out the grounds the party would cite.
Timing
The remarks come a day after Parliament passed the third reading of the 22nd Amendment and the Speaker endorsed the legislation. The amendment, which reshapes judicial appointments, was opposed by the main opposition and cleared the House after a contested two-day debate.
The SJB has not published a text of the motion and no date has been set for its submission. Until a motion is tabled, the party’s position remains a stated intention rather than a step taken on the order paper.
