Nine people travelling with sharp weapons have been arrested in the Jaffna area and remanded for 14 days, police said.
The group was stopped while travelling in a car and two motorcycles during a sudden inspection carried out by police officers, Hiru News reported on Sunday evening.
Officers recovered several sharp weapons and Rs. 900,000 in cash from inside the car.
Police said investigations are under way to establish whether the group was preparing to commit a crime using the weapons. No charges beyond the remand order have been disclosed, and police have not said whether the suspects are linked to any earlier incident.
The nine were produced before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court and remanded for 14 days.
What has not been disclosed
Police have not released the suspects’ ages or home districts, have not accounted for the origin of the cash, and have not named the division that carried out the stop-check. Nor has any explanation been given for why a group of nine was moving in convoy with weapons and a large sum of money.
The arrest follows a run of policing operations in the Jaffna peninsula this month, including the Navy’s seizure of drugs off Madagal valued by the Deputy Defence Minister at Rs. 1.5 billion — described as the largest along the northern coast in recent history.
