Two brothers were killed and their mother critically injured when the motorcycle the three were travelling on ran off the Madampe–Kuliyapitiya road and hit a pole early on Monday morning, police said.
The children were residents of Weerakodiyana in Dummalasuriya. Their mother was admitted to Chilaw General Hospital, where she is receiving treatment. The bodies have been placed at the same hospital for post-mortem examinations, Hiru News reported.
Madampe Police are investigating.
Accounts differ on the details
The two newsrooms reporting the crash agree on the road, the victims’ home village, the hospital and the investigating station, but differ on three points:
- Ages. The Daily Mirror reported the brothers as aged 17 and 11. Hiru News put them at 13 and 11.
- Time. The Daily Mirror gave the time as around 5:30 a.m.; Hiru News reported around 5:00 a.m.
- Location. The Daily Mirror placed the crash in the Halabandaragama area of the road, Hiru News in the Pothuwila area.
Both outlets describe the same mechanism — the motorcycle leaving the road and striking a pole — though the Daily Mirror calls it a streetlight pole and Hiru News an electric pole. Neither account explains the differences, and LankaNewz has not been able to resolve them. Ada Derana also reported the crash, but its site could not be retrieved for verification.
Three people on a single motorcycle is a common configuration on Sri Lanka’s secondary roads, where motorcycles account for the largest share of road deaths.
