Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday, taking gold with a final-attempt throw of 88.55 metres and delivering Sri Lanka its first gold medal of the Games.
Pathirage saved his best effort for his last throw of the final, the Daily Mirror reported. NewsFirst described the result as a first for the country in the event, saying no Sri Lankan had previously stood atop an Asian Games podium in the men’s javelin.

India’s Yashvir Singh took silver with a personal best of 85.72m, also produced on his final attempt, moving up from third place in the closing round. Rohit Yadav of India took bronze. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem — the reigning Olympic champion, and the highest-profile name in the field — finished fourth with a best of 80.29m, according to an ANI report carried by The Tribune.
The full finishing order was not carried by the Sri Lankan outlets that reported the win; the placings below gold come from Indian wire coverage of the same final.
A season without precedent for Sri Lankan athletics
The Asian title caps what has become the strongest season by a Sri Lankan thrower. Pathirage — who competes and is widely reported under the name Rumesh Tharanga — won the Commonwealth Games javelin title in Glasgow in July and went on to become Sri Lanka’s first world No. 1 in the event.
His personal best and national record of 92.62m was set at the Rome Diamond League in June. Monday’s winning mark fell short of that, but was enough against a field that included the Olympic champion.
The buildup was not entirely smooth: five of his competition javelins were damaged in transit from Budapest earlier this month, with a replacement set arranged before the Games.
Hiru News had reported before the final that the event was scheduled for 4.45pm and that Pathirage’s parents had travelled to Japan to watch him compete.
