The window to pay income tax for the 2025/2026 year of assessment closes today, and the Inland Revenue Department has warned that those who miss it face fines and interest, NewsFirst reported.

The deadline covers three categories of taxpayer: those liable for corporate income tax, individual income tax and partnership income tax.

The department said individuals and businesses that have not yet settled their liability must do so within the day. Those who fail to comply will be subject to penalties and interest charges.

How to pay

Payments can be made through the Inland Revenue Department’s online tax payment platform, or in person at any Bank of Ceylon branch.

The IRD had flagged the date in advance, issuing a public notice earlier in the week.

Context

The deadline lands on the same day the Central Bank held its policy rate at 8.75%, and in a year when the tax base itself is being widened — a Taxpayer Identification Number becomes mandatory for bank accounts, vehicle registration and land transactions from 1 November.

Revenue collection remains central to the government’s commitments under its IMF programme, where revenue-based fiscal consolidation has been the Fund’s stated approach.
