A 75-year-old woman was killed inside her home in Imbulahena, within the Kirindiwela police division, on Tuesday, and her husband died shortly afterwards under a train in the Veyangoda police area, Hiru News reported.
Police said the woman was attacked with a sharp weapon. Both she and her husband were residents of the area.
During a search of the house, investigators recovered a letter believed to have been written by the husband. Police said this led them to suspect he carried out the attack before taking his own life.
The motive is not known and remains under investigation.
Procedure
Following a magistrate’s inquest, the woman’s body was placed at the Wathupitiwala Hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination. Her husband’s remains were transferred to the same morgue.
Kirindiwela police are continuing inquiries.
A note on identification
This is a different case from the 2018 Kirindiwela matter also under investigation this month, in which the wife of a retired army soldier was arrested by the CID over his abduction and murder. The two share only a police division. Different families, different years, different offences.

Hiru does not name either party, give the husband’s age, state when the letter was written or what it said, or say whether the train death occurred before or after the body at the house was found. It does not report the time of either event beyond the date. No arrest arises, as the suspect is dead.
