A Colombo court has ordered 10 doctors who sat on the medical panel examining former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director retired Major General Suresh Sallay to appear before it on 6 October.

Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the notices after considering facts presented in a motion filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Hiru News reported. The Daily Mirror reported the same order, naming the same return date.

Why the court acted

The doctors had earlier recommended that Sallay remain admitted at the National Hospital in Colombo until 28 September. That date has now passed, and the court issued the notices directing the medical board to come before it and state what should happen next, according to Hiru’s account.

Sallay was arrested in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks and is still receiving treatment at the National Hospital, the Daily Mirror reported.

Background

The hospitalisation has been contested in court for weeks. When the medical board’s recommendation was made in September, the National Hospital’s director was himself under notice to explain a failure to furnish records, and the prosecution told the court it regarded the admission as a “medical conspiracy” — as reported in our earlier coverage of the medical board’s 28 September recommendation.

One detail differs between filings: the board appointed in September was described as a five-member panel, while both outlets reporting Friday’s order refer to 10 doctors who examined him. Neither report explains the difference, and LankaNewz has not independently reconciled the two figures.

Sallay’s surname is rendered Sallay by Hiru and Salley by the Daily Mirror.
