Sampath Bank has enabled businesses to accept Google Pay through its Internet Payment Gateway, completing the second half of a rollout that began in July with the consumer side of the same wallet.
The bank has partnered with Bancstac to add the capability, Hiru News reported. Merchants already on the Sampath IPG, or onboarding to it, can switch the service on without additional technical integration or development work.
Where it applies
Participating merchants can offer Google Pay across e-commerce sites, mobile apps and digital invoices. The bank says that gives them access to a wallet with more than 250 million users across 85 countries — relevant to merchants selling to overseas customers and to inbound visitors as much as to the domestic market.
At checkout, the gateway uses tokenisation, so transactions are processed without exposing or sharing card details. Customers authenticate with biometric verification or a device passcode, and Bancstac processes the transaction in real time.
Reconciliation runs through the bank’s existing settlement process, so merchants keep their current accounting and settlement procedures.
The two halves of the rollout
The distinction matters: in July 2026 Sampath enabled Google Pay for its own Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cardholders, letting them digitise cards and tap to pay. That was the issuing side. Monday’s announcement is the acquiring side — letting shops and online sellers banking with Sampath take Google Pay payments from anyone using the wallet, whichever bank issued their card.
Chirath Samarasekara, Head of Card Centre at Sampath Bank, said the bank “continually adopt[s] new technologies that drive higher customer engagement”, describing the move as an extension of an existing partnership with Bancstac. Bancstac CEO Evan Lau said the addition removes technical barriers for merchants wanting to accept a widely used wallet, and should help conversion rates and reduce cart abandonment.
Not reported
The announcement does not say how many merchants are on the Sampath IPG, what the bank charges for Google Pay transactions, or when the service goes live for existing merchants.
