Water supply to five areas in the Kalutara district will be suspended for eight hours on Thursday (8 October) while essential maintenance is carried out at the Kehena Water Treatment Plant, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has said.

The interruption runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Daily Mirror reported.

Areas affected

The Board said the maintenance work is being carried out to improve the quality of the water supply service. It advised consumers in the affected areas to use stored water sparingly during the interruption, and apologised for the inconvenience.

Context

This is the second scheduled supply interruption announced by the NWSDB this week and the two are unconnected: a separate 48-hour cut covering three areas near Katugastota, in the Kandy district, began on Tuesday morning and is due to end at 9 a.m. on the same day the Kalutara cut starts. Different plants, different districts — residents in one are not affected by the other.

Not reported

The notice does not say what the maintenance at Kehena involves or how many consumers are affected. There is no indication of whether bowser supply will be provided during the interruption, and no contingency is given for the possibility that work overruns the stated 5 p.m. restoration time. The Board has not said whether discoloured water should be expected when supply resumes, which is the usual consequence of works of this kind.
