Police have seized close to five kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as “ice”, along with a quantity of heroin from a rented house in Ja-Ela, in a stock Hiru News reports is valued at over Rs. 50 million.
NewsFirst reported that a suspect was arrested along with 4kg 850g of ice and 161g of heroin. Hiru News reported a quantity of 4kg 870g of ice and a stock of heroin, and put the value at more than Rs. 50 million — a figure NewsFirst’s filing does not carry.
The stock was traced through an existing suspect
Both outlets agree on how the house was found: the operation followed the further questioning of a person already arrested on drug charges, who disclosed details of a racket run from a rented property in the Ja-Ela area.
They differ on the circumstances of that earlier arrest. NewsFirst says the suspect had previously been arrested in Peliyagoda; Hiru says the individual was detained with drugs following a motor car inspection in the Ja-Ela area itself.
The two accounts name different units
NewsFirst attributes the operation to the Peliyagoda Division Crime Investigation Bureau, acting on information it had received. Hiru attributes the raid to the Kelaniya Division Crimes Investigation Bureau.
Both divisions fall within the Gampaha district policing area and the two names may reflect different renderings of the same unit, but neither filing resolves the point. The 20-gramme gap between the two reported weights is likewise unexplained; one figure is likely a rounding or transcription difference rather than a separate seizure, as every other detail matches.
Context
Crystal methamphetamine seizures have run at a high level through this year, and the pattern in this case — a rented house used as a store, exposed by the interrogation of a courier already in custody — is a recurring one in recent police operations.
Not reported
Neither filing names the arrested suspect, gives an age or address, or says which court the suspect will be produced before. Neither reports whether anyone else has been detained, nor whether the earlier Peliyagoda arrest and this seizure form part of a wider investigation.
