New motorcycles will be registered at five district offices of the Department of Motor Traffic from 19 October, removing the need for owners in those districts to route the paperwork through Colombo.
The offices are at Jaffna, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Gampaha.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Retired Air Vice Marshal Thushara Indunil Fernando said the service would begin at the five offices once the officials concerned had been given the necessary orientation, the Daily Mirror reported.
Motorcycles first, other classes later
Hiru News reports a further detail, given by the Commissioner General in response to an inquiry from its news desk: only motorcycle registration will open in this first phase, and the Department expects to extend the arrangement to the registration of all motor vehicles later.
Not reported: neither filing says how long the extension to other vehicle classes is expected to take, whether further district offices will be added, or on what basis the five were selected. Neither gives the fees or documents required, says whether the existing central process remains available to owners in those districts, or sets out what the orientation for officials involves.
