Progress on the “Clean Colombo” strand of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative was reviewed at a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Friday morning, chaired by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, the Daily Mirror reported.
The programme covers rehabilitation of the capital’s sewerage networks and drainage canals, environmental beautification, and improvements to waste management.
Who is implementing it
Six institutions were named as the main implementers:
- Colombo Municipal Council
- Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation
- Urban Development Authority
- Road Development Authority
- Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management
- Sri Lanka Railways
Officials discussed ongoing projects and the action plans each body is working to, and reviewed progress so far.
The meeting also pressed for other Clean Sri Lanka activities running elsewhere in the country that are relevant to the capital to be folded into the Clean Colombo programme. The initiative is framed around social well-being, environmental sustainability and what the government calls an ethical revival, to be achieved by encouraging changes in public behaviour.
Clean Sri Lanka is a flagship programme of the current administration, coordinated out of the Presidential Secretariat rather than a line ministry — which is why the review was chaired by the President’s Secretary and not by a minister.
