The bodies of two sisters found behind a house in the Ginigala area of Habaraduwa have been taken to Karapitiya Hospital for post-mortem examination, after police concluded the women had been beaten and murdered, Hiru News reported.
The two women were 81 and 87 years old. Both were unmarried retired teachers from the same family, and they lived alone in the house.
What police say happened
Police suspect the sisters were beaten with a stone and killed, and that their bodies were then left behind the house where they lived.
The two were the owners of a large property, and police said a group may have carried out the killings with the intention of taking property from them, including gold jewellery and money.
Scenes of Crime Officers from the Galle Division attended the site and carried out inspections before the bodies were removed for post-mortem examination.
An unresolved detail in the filing
Hiru’s account contains an internal inconsistency about timing that it does not reconcile. It states that the bodies were brought to Karapitiya Hospital “last afternoon (08)” — that is, Thursday — but then says this followed site inspections conducted “this afternoon.” The two statements cannot both describe the same sequence on the same day.
This newsroom is reporting the discrepancy rather than choosing between the two readings. What is consistent across the filing is the sequence itself: Scenes of Crime Officers inspected the site first, and the bodies were removed for post-mortem afterwards.
Not reported
The filing does not name the victims, and it does not say when the bodies were first discovered or by whom. No arrest has been reported, and no suspect has been identified or described beyond the suggestion that “a group” may have been involved.
It does not state whether anything was in fact found to be missing from the house, which would bear directly on the robbery motive police have advanced. Nor does it give the post-mortem findings, name the judicial medical officer, or say whether a magistrate has visited the scene.
A single-source report
This story rests on one verified newsroom. Ada Derana has also carried the case, but its site has returned a CloudFront block to this desk for eighteen consecutive days and could not be fetched or cited. No other verified outlet reachable from here had filed on the deaths at the time of writing.
