Representatives of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) met on Friday morning at SLFP headquarters for what the Daily Mirror described as a special meeting between the two parties.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam and SLFP President Nimal Siripala de Silva attended.

The SLFP side also included Mahinda Amaraweera, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Duminda Silva. The SLPP delegation included Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Sanjeeva Edirimanna.

Citing political sources, the paper said discussions focused on the current political situation in the country and on the parties’ future course of action.

No announcement

No alliance, agreement or joint platform was announced, and the report carries no direct quotes from any participant. Neither party issued a statement setting out what, if anything, was decided.

The two parties governed together for most of the last decade before the National People’s Power won the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, reducing both to a small presence in Parliament.

Ada Derana also carried a report of Friday’s meeting, but the site has been returning a CloudFront block to this desk for nearly three weeks and could not be fetched to verify its publication date, so it is not cited here.

Not reported

The report does not say who called the meeting, whether it was the first in a series, or whether a further meeting has been scheduled. It gives no indication of whether electoral cooperation, a merger or a joint candidate was raised, and does not say whether SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa or any member of the Rajapaksa family was consulted.
