Six people were killed in road accidents across Sri Lanka in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, police said, in four separate collisions reported from the Northern, Western and Sabaragamuwa regions. The deaths were reported by NewsFirst on Saturday.
The four collisions
A father and his infant daughter, Puliyankulam. A 41-year-old man and his one-year-old daughter, both residents of Jaffna, died when their motorcycle collided with a cement-loaded truck in the Puthur area on the Puliyankulam–A-09 road. Police said the motorcycle was attempting to overtake a bus at the time. The child’s mother was injured and taken first to Puliyankulam Hospital, then transferred to Vavuniya Hospital.
A couple, Weliweriya. A 26-year-old couple from Ihalayagoda, Weliweriya, were killed when their motorcycle collided with a bus in the Henegama area.
A three-wheeler driver, Pitipana. A 64-year-old three-wheeler driver from Panagoda died after his vehicle collided with a van at Maya Mawatha on the Pitipana–Moragahahena road.
A motorcyclist, Balangoda. A 48-year-old motorcyclist died when his motorcycle collided with a private bus in the Kirimanagoda area on the Imbulamura–Balangoda road.
One pattern runs through all four
Every one of the six people killed was travelling on a motorcycle or a three-wheeler, and every collision was with a larger vehicle — a truck in one case, a van in another, and buses in the remaining two. Three of the four crashes involved a bus.
That distribution is the substantive point in an otherwise routine daily police return. It is consistent with the long-standing shape of road deaths in Sri Lanka, where riders of two- and three-wheeled vehicles are heavily over-represented among fatalities relative to their share of traffic. In April, Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake said annual road deaths currently exceed 2,700 and set a target of cutting them sharply by 2029.
Not reported
None of the dead are named, and no ages are given for the Weliweriya couple beyond both being 26. Police do not say whether any driver has been arrested in any of the four cases, whether any vehicle has been taken into custody, or whether charges are contemplated.
The filing gives no time of day for any of the four collisions, so the sequence within the 24-hour window is unknown. It does not state the condition of the injured mother in the Puliyankulam crash, and it does not say whether the one-year-old and her parents were the only people on the motorcycle. No cause is assigned beyond the overtaking manoeuvre noted in the first case.
The report also gives no national running total for the year, and no comparison with the equivalent period in previous weeks or years.
A single-source report
This account rests on one verified newsroom. A search of the other verified Sri Lankan outlets returned no filing on these four collisions; the results were entirely older editions of the recurring “N killed in road accidents” wire story, some of them years old, and none of them these incidents. Ada Derana’s site has returned a block to this desk for twenty-two consecutive days and could not be checked.
