A former member of the Western Provincial Council has been remanded over a road accident in which a motorcyclist was seriously injured, Hiru News reported.
Chandrabhanu Adikaram was remanded until Tuesday, 13 October — a one-day remand — after being arrested by Ittapana Police.
The accident
The collision took place on the evening of Sunday, 11 October on the Ittapana–Avittawa road in the Kalutara district.
Hiru reports that a car belonging to the former council member was driven onto the main road and collided with a motorcyclist. The injured rider was first admitted to the Ittapana regional hospital and later transferred to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital, an indication that his injuries were serious enough to require a larger facility.
The arrest was made over reckless driving.
A note on the account
Hiru’s filing describes the car as having been “driven recklessly onto the main road” — a passive construction that does not explicitly state who was at the wheel. The report nonetheless attributes the injury to the former member’s driving and says he was arrested over it. This desk has reported the account as filed rather than resolving the ambiguity.
Hiru identifies Adikaram’s party as the “Podujana Eksath Peramuna”. That rendering does not match either of the two similarly named Sri Lankan parties exactly — the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) or the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) — and this desk has not independently established which he belonged to. His name also appears as Adhikaram in Hiru’s own URL and as Adikaram in its headline.
Not reported
Hiru does not name the court that ordered the remand, the motorcyclist, or the charges filed. It does not give the rider’s current condition beyond the transfer to Kalutara, say when Adikaram served on the provincial council, or report any statement from him or his lawyers.
Sourcing note: this report rests on a single verified newsroom. A search of Daily Mirror, NewsFirst, Ada Derana, Daily News, Colombo Gazette, Island and Daily FT found no other verified filing on the incident; the only other outlet carrying it was ttvnews.lk, which is not a verified source for this desk and which described the suspect as a parliamentarian rather than a former provincial councillor. Ada Derana has returned a CloudFront block to this desk for 24 consecutive days.
