Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thera has been hospitalised during the satyagraha at Colombo’s Viharamahadevi Park demanding the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, two verified newsrooms reported on Saturday evening.
Participants in the protest alleged that the monk was assaulted by police officers, the Daily Mirror reported at 8.34 p.m. The allegation triggered a tense situation between police and the protesters, the paper said. Participants then arranged for him to be rushed to hospital in a Suwa Seriya ambulance.
Hiru News, filing at 9.09 p.m., reports only that the monk was hospitalised during the satyagraha at the park, without a cause.
The assault is an allegation by protesters, not an established fact. No police account of the incident has been reported by any newsroom, and neither filing carries a response from Kollupitiya police, the Colombo police division or the Police Media Division. This desk is attributing the claim, not adopting it.
The monk is named on the court order the campaign is complying with
Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thera is not an incidental participant. He is fourth on the list of monks barred from the area around the Presidential Secretariat by Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena on 16 October — an order made under section 106(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act on a police application, as this desk reported. NewsFirst published the names on the barred list; his appears there as “Ven. Balangoda Kashyapa,” a transliteration variant of the same name.
Viharamahadevi Park is where the campaign regrouped after complying with that order and dismantling its shelters outside the Secretariat. The park is outside the barred zone. Nothing in either filing suggests the hospitalised monk was in breach of the order, and the order is not mentioned by either outlet.
What had already happened at the park that day
Saturday’s incident was not the first friction at the new site. The monks arrived at Viharamahadevi Park on Friday afternoon, and a tense situation arose with police as the group attempted to erect a temporary shelter for the night, the Daily Mirror reported at 8.40 a.m. on Saturday. Ven. Tittagalle Anandasiri Thera said the group would not vacate the premises until Gnanasara Thera is released.
That filing also answers a question this archive had left open: the monks moved to the park after stating that their discussions with the Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana had ended in failure. So the relocation was a response to collapsed talks, not only to the court order.
A dispute over a shelter on Friday night and an alleged assault on Saturday are the two reported points of contact between police and the campaign at the park. No filing links them.
A near-identical headline from 2023 is a different event
Searching this monk’s name returns the headline “Balangoda Kassapa Thero arrested during Satyagraha” across several outlets. That story is from 8 February 2023. It concerns a satyagraha blocking the parliamentary entry road on the morning the Fourth Session of the Ninth Parliament was inaugurated, staged by the Maha Sangha against plans to implement the 13th Amendment; Ven. Kassapa Thera and one other person, Kamantha Thushara, were arrested there.
It is a different satyagraha, a different cause and a different decade of the dispute. No verified newsroom has reported an arrest in Saturday’s incident. Readers encountering the 2023 headline should not read it as today’s.
A separate name caution: Dr. Ven. Vitharandeniye Kassapa Thera, Vice President of the Sri Lanka Sangha Sabha in the United Kingdom, who wrote to the Commissioner General of Prisons this month over the removal of Gnanasara Thera’s robes, is a different monk.

Neither verified filing names the hospital, states the monk’s condition, or says whether he has been admitted or discharged. Neither gives the time of the incident, what the protesters and police were arguing about, or how many officers were involved.
There is no police version at all — no confirmation, no denial, no statement that any inquiry has been opened. Whether a complaint has been lodged, whether the National Police Commission or the Human Rights Commission has been notified, and whether any officer has been identified are all unreported.
Also unreported: whether the campaign intends to continue the satyagraha at the park after the incident, and whether the alleged assault changes the government’s position. Minister K.D. Lal Kantha ruled out a pardon on Friday and no minister has commented since.
