Four people were killed on Monday morning when a cement mixer collided with a line of vehicles at Kurugoda junction in Akurana, in the Kandy district, police said. Around 10 vehicles were damaged, a three-wheeler and another vehicle were destroyed, a motorcycle caught fire, and the Kandy–Matale road was blocked outright.
The crash happened on the main road at Akurana 7 Kanuwa, Kurugoda junction, within the Alawathugoda police division, Hiru News reported at 11.43 a.m., citing Alawathugoda Police. At that point police reported six people hospitalised with serious injuries and no deaths.
The toll climbed over about half an hour
The number of dead was not established in the first reports. Setting the filings in order shows how it emerged:
| Time (Colombo) | Outlet | Reported |
|---|---|---|
| 11.43 a.m. | Hiru News | 6 seriously injured, ~10 vehicles damaged, no deaths |
| 11.51 a.m. | NewsFirst | 3 killed, injured still arriving at hospital |
| 11.59 a.m. | Daily Mirror | 4 killed |
| 12.14 p.m. | Hiru News | 4 killed, several injured hospitalised |
| 12.44 p.m. | Hiru News | 4 killed, road completely blocked |
NewsFirst’s first filing reported three deaths and noted that “the full extent of the injuries and damage caused by the collision has not yet been confirmed.” It later filed a second report under a headline giving four deaths. Four is the figure now carried by all three newsrooms, and this article reports four.
What police describe
A cement mixer went out of control and struck several vehicles travelling along the road. The Daily Mirror reported at 11.59 a.m. that the truck “collided with several vehicles and pedestrians” — the only filing to place people on foot among those hit, which may explain how a collision between vehicles produced four deaths and relatively few vehicle occupants injured.
Police told Hiru that close to 10 vehicles were damaged, that a three-wheeler and one other vehicle were completely destroyed, and that a motorcycle caught fire. The Daily Mirror gives the same three details and adds that a large crowd of residents gathered at the scene.
The injured
Accounts of the injured differ, and the difference looks like two bodies counting two things.
Alawathugoda Police, via Hiru, reported six people hospitalised with serious injuries. A spokesperson for Akurana Hospital, via NewsFirst, said four people were injured, of whom two in critical condition were transferred to the National Hospital in Kandy for specialised treatment. NewsFirst’s earlier filing said injured victims “were continuing to be brought to medical facilities” while emergency work went on — so the hospital’s count was taken while casualties were still arriving.
Neither figure is presented here as the total. No filing gives a consolidated casualty count, and none identifies any of the dead or says whether they were vehicle occupants or pedestrians.
The road was shut
Alawathugoda Police said traffic on the Kandy–Matale main road was completely blocked at Kurugoda junction, Hiru reported at 12.44 p.m. Heavy congestion built up, and police asked drivers on that route to use alternative roads.
One apparent discrepancy in the coverage is not one. Hiru places the crash on the Kandy–Jaffna A9 road and NewsFirst on the Kandy–Matale road; both are correct, because the A9 runs from Kandy through Matale on its way north, and Akurana sits on that stretch. The Daily Mirror simply calls it Kurugoda junction.
A second difference is unresolved. The Daily Mirror and NewsFirst both describe a cement mixer truck; Hiru’s Sinhala filings describe a lorry loaded with cement (සිමෙන්ති පැටවූ ලොරි රථයක්), which is a different vehicle. The distinction matters for weight and braking, and no filing settles it.
Not reported
No filing names the dead or the injured, gives their ages, or says whether any were pedestrians. None reports the mixer driver’s condition, whether he survived, or whether he has been arrested or questioned. None gives a cause for the vehicle going out of control — no mechanical failure, brake failure, speed or gradient is mentioned, and Akurana lies on a hill route where runaway heavy vehicles are a known hazard.
None says when the road reopened, how long the blockage lasted, or whether the Kurugoda junction has a prior accident record. No court or police inquiry has been reported, and no statement has been reported from the vehicle’s owner or operator.
