Sri Lanka’s “A Nation United” operation arrested 300,218 people and seized more than 2,500 firearms in its first year, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa said, NewsFirst reported.
The figures cover 30 October 2025 to 18 October 2026 — a defined window, which matters for reasons set out below.
The published breakdown
| Category | Raids | Seized |
|---|---|---|
| Heroin | 97,074 | 2,485.1 kg |
| ”Ice” (crystal meth) | 18,710 | 3,302.07 kg |
| Cocaine | 261 | 297.1 kg |
| Cannabis | 65,765 | 11,146 kg + 16.7 mn plants |
| Kush, hashish, pills, Mawa | 21,323 | 1,723 kg Kush, 416 kg hashish, 4.5 mn tablets |
Alongside the arrests, investigations into illegal assets were opened against 449 people, detention orders were obtained against 3,749, and 2,580 were referred for rehabilitation.
Three things the figures show
The raid total and the arrest total are different numbers, and they are being conflated. Jayatissa gave 300,218 arrests and a separate total of 303,017 raids. The two differ by under 1%, which is how the raid figure has ended up circulating as an arrest count. They are not the same measure.
The published categories do not account for all the raids. The five drug categories above sum to 203,133 raids — about 99,900 short of the stated 303,017 total. Roughly a third of the operation’s activity therefore sits outside the breakdown released, and no filing says what it was: firearms, organised crime, or something else.
Almost nobody arrested was referred for treatment. The 2,580 rehabilitation referrals are 0.86% of those arrested — fewer than one in 100. Illegal-asset investigations were opened against 0.15%, and detention orders obtained against 1.25%. For an operation described as targeting the drug trade, the overwhelming majority of its 300,000 arrests ended in neither asset investigation nor treatment.
This settles a question this desk left open
On 18 October this desk reported the President’s Badulla speech, which gave drug seizure totals that could not be placed on a single clock: heroin dated from 30 October 2025, cocaine given as “within this year”, and the “Ice” figure simply as current. That article recorded explicitly that the three could not be added into one annual total.
Jayatissa’s account puts all of them on the same window, and the totals line up closely with the President’s — 2,485.1 kg against 2,484 for heroin, 3,302.07 against 3,301 for Ice, 297.1 against 297 for cocaine. The President was quoting the same dataset. The period is now defined, and the figures can be read as a single year.
Not reported
No filing gives a comparison with any previous period, so none of these totals can be read as a rise or a fall. None names the agencies credited with the seizures, how many of the 300,218 arrests led to charges or convictions, or how many of the 2,500 firearms were recovered in drug raids as opposed to separate operations. The street value of the narcotics is not given.
Ada Derana also filed on this briefing. Its content delivery network has returned an HTTP 403 to this desk for 32 days, so its account could not be read or cited, and figures attributed to it elsewhere could not be checked.
