The national carrier SriLankan Airlines has been taken over by hackers, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera told Parliament on Tuesday.

Jayasekera said the attackers had already notified the airline that they had taken control of its software system.

“Even the emails of SriLankan Airlines employees have been hacked,” he said.

The MP urged the government to accept an offer made by the United States government to help get the system released from the hackers.

What this report does and does not establish

The account is an assertion made by an opposition MP on the floor of the House. The Daily Mirror filing carries no response from SriLankan Airlines, the Ministry responsible for the airline, the Attorney General’s Department or any cybersecurity authority, and no independent confirmation that an intrusion has occurred. Readers should treat the claim as a parliamentary allegation rather than a confirmed incident until the airline or the government responds.

This is also a separate matter from the fraudulent SriLankan Airlines mobile applications reported earlier in October, in which criminals used a fake app to harvest customers’ bank details. That case concerns impersonation of the airline’s brand by a third party, not access to the airline’s own systems. The two should not be read together on the strength of the shared name.

Not reported

The report does not say when the intrusion is alleged to have begun, what systems are affected beyond “the software system” and staff email, whether bookings, flight operations or passenger data are involved, or whether any ransom has been demanded. It does not describe the nature or the terms of the US offer, who made it, when it was made, or why the government has not taken it up. No evidence for the claim is cited, and no other verified newsroom had filed on it at the time of writing.
