One of three workers buried when an earth mound collapsed at a construction site in Karithakanda, Ambalangoda, has died, police said on Wednesday.

The three were working at the site when the mound of earth gave way on top of them. All three were taken to hospital. The other two are being treated at Balapitiya Base Hospital and their condition is not serious, Hiru News reported, citing police.

The man who died was 54 years old, a resident of the Okanda area of Ambalangoda, and a father of two.

This was a construction accident, not a natural landslide

The distinction is worth stating plainly, because the event is easily miscast.

The collapse happened at a work site, to workers on the job — an earth mound failing on a construction excavation. It was not a slope failure in a residential area, and it is not part of the monsoon landslide pattern that produces National Building Research Organisation warnings and evacuation advisories.

That matters for what follows from it. A natural landslide is a disaster-management question. An earth collapse onto three workers at a construction site is an occupational safety question, and it raises a different set of issues: whether the excavation was shored, whether the work was supervised, and whether the site complied with the Factories Ordinance.

Hiru’s own English headline describes the man as having been “buried under a landslide,” which obscures that difference. The Sinhala body is specific — ඉදිකිරීම් ස්ථානයක සේවය කරමින් සිටිය දී, “while working at a construction site.”

Not reported

The filing does not name the deceased, and does not say when the collapse occurred, when he died, or whether he died at the scene, in transit or in hospital. It does not identify the project, the contractor, the site owner, or what was being built or excavated.

It gives no indication of the depth or scale of the excavation, whether any shoring or trench support was in place, or whether the site had been inspected. It does not say whether the Department of Labour has been notified or whether any investigation beyond the police inquiry has begun, and it carries no comment from the contractor.

No other verified newsroom had filed on the death at the time of writing. An earlier report of the same incident, carried by a non-verified outlet, described three construction workers injured by an earth collapse near a temple at Karithakanda — consistent with this account at the injury stage, before the death. That report is not cited as a source here because its publication date could not be verified.
