SriLankan Airlines has won the overall championship at the 2026 Trade Services Swimming Championship, its first victory in the event in close to two decades.
The national carrier’s team scored 582 points to secure first place, Hiru News reported. The airline attributed the result to the skill, team spirit and commitment of the 64 swimmers who represented it.
The titles won
Alongside the overall championship, SriLankan took three further titles at the meet:
- Men’s overall championship
- Novices — men’s overall championship
- Novices — women’s overall championship
The combination is worth noting. Winning both novices’ divisions as well as the senior men’s title points to depth across a large squad rather than a handful of strong individual swimmers — which is consistent with a 64-member team and with an aggregate points format, where breadth of entry counts for more than individual peaks.
A note on the competitor
This is the company competing, not the country. The Trade Services championship is a mercantile meet — an inter-company competition between employee teams — so the winner here is SriLankan Airlines as an employer, not a Sri Lankan national representative side.
The distinction is easy to lose in translation: the Sinhala ශ්රීලංකන් denotes the airline, while ශ්රී ලාංකික would denote a Sri Lankan person. A reader seeing “SriLankan wins 2026 championship” could reasonably take it for a national result. It is not one.
Not reported
The filing does not say when or where the championship was held — it says only that the meet took place පසුගිය දා, “recently” — nor over how many days, how many companies or teams competed, or which organisation sanctions the event.
It does not name a single swimmer, coach or official from the winning team, gives no event-by-event results, and does not name the runners-up or the points they scored, so the margin of victory is unknown. It gives no figure for the airline’s previous win beyond “nearly two decades,” and does not say which year that was.
The item is an organisational announcement rather than independent sports reporting, and no other verified newsroom had filed on the result at the time of writing.
