The owner of a holiday resort at Fourth Mile Post Junction in the Trincomalee police division was attacked with a sharp weapon and killed on Tuesday night, and police have begun a murder investigation.
Trincomalee Police opened the inquiry after receiving a report of the killing, Hiru News reported at 6.50 a.m. on Wednesday.
The dead man was 56 and lived in the Singhapura area of Trincomalee.
Investigations so far indicate the killing was carried out while the victim was alone on the resort premises. The motive has not been established, and Trincomalee Police are continuing inquiries with a view to arresting those responsible. No arrest has been reported.
One attacker or several is not settled
Hiru’s headline states the resort owner was attacked by a group. Its own report is more guarded: the investigation so far indicates the killing was carried out by “some group or an individual.”
The report therefore does not establish how many people were involved, and this desk does not adopt the headline’s firmer claim. Police have not said publicly whether they are looking for one suspect or more.
Not reported
The report does not name the victim or the resort, give the time of the attack, say who found the body or made the report to police, or describe the weapon beyond its being sharp. It does not say whether anything was taken from the premises, whether there were signs of forced entry, or whether the resort was open to guests at the time. No post-mortem has been reported.
Ada Derana has also filed on the killing. Its content delivery network has returned an HTTP 403 to this desk for 32 consecutive days, so that report could not be read, dated or cited. It is noted here so readers know a second verified newsroom has covered the case, not as a source for anything above.
