Sri Lankan para-swimmer Galina Basnayake has won silver in the Women’s 400m Freestyle S9 final at the 5th Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan — the country’s first swimming medal of the Games.

Basnayake finished in 4 minutes 59.58 seconds, the Daily Mirror reported on Thursday, describing the race as having taken place the previous day. China’s Xu Jialing took gold in 4:56.07 and Japan’s Ema Magde the bronze in 5:21.04.

The times show a two-horse race well clear of the field. Basnayake finished 3.51 seconds behind the winner but 21.46 seconds ahead of the bronze medallist — a gap six times larger than the one that cost her gold.

Sri Lanka’s three medals

The silver is Sri Lanka’s third medal at the Games, giving the country two silvers and a bronze. The earlier two came on consecutive days:

Wickramasinghe’s silver was reported by the Daily Mirror on Wednesday as Sri Lanka’s second medal, won the day after Safran’s bronze. Thailand’s S. Inthacho won that event in 25.23 seconds, with Indonesia’s Nanda Sholihah third in 25.93.

Basnayake’s record

Basnayake first drew attention at the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games in Bahrain, where she won three golds in the S9 50m, 100m and 400m freestyle, adding a silver in the 100m butterfly at an Asian para-swimming competition.

Not reported

The Daily Mirror does not give the size of the Sri Lankan team in Japan, the number of events still to come, or where the country stands on the medal table. It does not name Basnayake’s coach or say whether the time is a personal best.
