One person was killed and 10 injured when a passenger bus travelling from Colombo to Vavuniya overturned on the Anuradhapura–Puttalam road on Thursday evening, police said.
The crash happened in the Saliyawewa area, at the point local reports identify as the 19th post, according to Hiru News. Police attribute it to the bus skidding on a road made slippery by the prevailing wet weather.
The casualty figures are stated separately in the Sinhala report: one person died and 10 others were injured, so the 10 taken to hospital are in addition to the fatality rather than inclusive of it.
Hiru does not name the person killed, give the number of passengers aboard, identify the bus operator, or say whether the driver is among the injured.
The second overturning on this road in five days
This is the second bus to leave the Puttalam–Anuradhapura road in wet weather within five days. On the night of Friday 17 October, a Colombo–Anuradhapura luxury bus overturned near the Mee Oya bridge and injured 12 people, all with minor injuries. Three newsrooms attributed that crash to the weather as well.
The two incidents are distinct: different locations on the route, different destinations, and different casualty signatures — twelve injured and no deaths on 17 October, one death and 10 injured on 22 October.
The crashes fall inside a sustained wet spell. The Meteorology Department has warned of showers above 100 mm in several provinces, and the National Building Research Organisation issued landslide warnings for nine districts on Thursday.
Not reported
Hiru News is the only newsroom this desk could find carrying this crash at the time of writing, roughly three and a half hours after it was filed. A scan of the Daily Mirror’s breaking-news listing down to ID 353165 on Thursday night showed no filing on it, NewsFirst’s homepage carried none, and domain-restricted searches of Ada Derana, the Daily Mirror, NewsFirst, Colombo Gazette, Newswire and the Island returned only the 17 October crash and older accidents on the same route.
No filing states the time of the crash, whether the road was closed, or whether the vehicle’s condition is being examined alongside the weather.
