The Araliya Hotel Group prepared a 500kg Christmas cake mixture at Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya on Friday, marking the start of its preparations to welcome visitors over the coming Christmas season.
The cake mixing was staged at the lakeside in the hill-country town, the Daily Mirror reported. Half a tonne of mixture was prepared in a single batch.
Cake mixing ceremonies are a fixture of the Sri Lankan hotel calendar, held from late October onwards to mark the point at which fruit is steeped in advance of the baking season. The occasions are typically public, drawing staff, guests and local residents to help fold dried fruit, peel, nuts and spirits into the mixture, which is then left to mature for several weeks before baking.
For Nuwara Eliya, the timing points to the season ahead rather than its traditional April peak. The town fills during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period, but the December holidays have become a second window for domestic travel and for visitors drawn to the cooler climate of the hill country.
Gregory Lake, the reservoir at the centre of the town, is Nuwara Eliya’s principal attraction and the site of much of its organised tourism activity.
