Sri Lanka’s Janani Dhananjana Wickramasinghe won the Women’s Long Jump T47 at the Asian Para Games in Japan on Friday with a leap of 5.52 metres, setting a new competition record in the process.

Hiru News reported that Wickramasinghe led the field throughout the event at the fifth edition of the Games before securing the title with the record mark.

The result is confirmed in the broadcast footage published alongside the report, which shows the athlete in a Sri Lanka vest in front of a results board displaying the distance beside a red GR flag — the standard marker for a Games record.

Her second medal of these Games

The gold is Wickramasinghe’s second medal at Aichi-Nagoya. She had already taken a silver earlier in the week, before the country’s tally began to change colour.

By this desk’s tracking, Sri Lanka’s medals at these Games now stand at five: a bronze for Mohamed Safran, silvers for Wickramasinghe and para-swimmer Galina Basnayake in the Women’s 400m Freestyle S9, and golds for Pradeep Somasiri in the 1500m T46 and now Wickramasinghe in the long jump.

That makes Friday the country’s strongest day of the Games so far — two golds inside a few hours, Somasiri’s reported at around 7.50 a.m. Colombo time and Wickramasinghe’s at about 8.40 a.m.

About the classification

The T47 class covers athletes with unilateral upper-limb impairment affecting the elbow, wrist or hand. Long jumpers in the class compete without the use of one arm for balance and drive at take-off, which is why marks in T47 sit below the able-bodied equivalent.

Hiru does not itself characterise the medal as Sri Lanka’s second gold; that sequence is drawn from this desk’s own tracking of the medals reported so far. No other verified newsroom had filed on the result at the time of writing, and the Sri Lankan athletics authorities had not published an official confirmation of the record mark.
