A 10-year-old schoolgirl has died after the motorcycle she was travelling on collided with a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus in Anuradhapura on Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened in Anuradhapura town, Hiru News reported, citing its own correspondent.

A mother and her daughter were riding the motorcycle when it was struck by an SLTB bus running the Anuradhapura–Thuruwila route.

Both were seriously injured and were taken immediately to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The daughter died after admission. She was a schoolgirl from Wijayapura, Anuradhapura.

The driver of the bus has been arrested as a suspect. The traffic division of the Anuradhapura Police is conducting further investigations.

Context

It is the second fatal bus crash reported in the Anuradhapura district in a fortnight. A passenger bus travelling from Colombo to Vavuniya overturned at Saliyawewa on 22 October, killing one person and injuring ten, on a stretch of the Puttalam–Anuradhapura road that had already seen a rain-related bus crash five days earlier.

Not reported: Hiru’s filing does not give the mother’s condition, the exact time or location of the collision within the town, the girl’s school, or any account of how the two vehicles came into contact. The report does not name the child, and this article does not either.

Sourcing: this is a single-source report. Hiru News filed at 9.04 p.m. Colombo time. A search of the other verified newsrooms found no independent filing on this crash at the time of writing — the Daily Mirror’s breaking-news listing carried nothing on it, and Ada Derana’s pages have been unreachable from this desk for 39 days. Searches returned several similar Anuradhapura motorcycle-and-bus collisions from earlier dates, none of which is this incident.
