A 34-year-old man has been arrested at Kirigaha junction in Mawanella with two pistols, a 12-bore shotgun and a quantity of ammunition, police say.

The arrest was made by the Kegalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit, Hiru News reported on Saturday.

Officers took into custody two pistols, five magazines, 156 lead balls of shot, one 12-bore shotgun and 20 shotgun cartridges found in the suspect’s possession at the time of the arrest.

Police have obtained a 72-hour detention order to question him further.

Not reported

The filing does not name the suspect or give his place of residence, say what prompted the operation, or state whether the weapons were licensed or where they are believed to have come from. It does not say whether the pistols were loaded, give their make or calibre, or say whether any of the weapons has been linked to a previous offence.

It does not record which court issued the detention order, nor whether the suspect is known to police. A 72-hour detention order permits questioning before the suspect is produced; no production date is given.

No other verified newsroom had filed on the arrest at the time of writing, and a search returned no English-language account of it.
