Standoff at Viharamahadevi Park as council officials try to remove satyagraha banners

A heated confrontation broke out at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo on Saturday (24) between Buddhist monks staging a satyagraha for the release of the imprisoned Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera and officials of the Colombo Municipal Council, after the officials moved to remove display boards the protesters had put up at the site.

Hiru News reported that the unrest began when council officials attempted to detach and take away boards the monks had installed on the grounds, and that the monks resisted. Its correspondent at the scene described the exchange as a heated argument between the two sides, Hiru News reported.

Footage published with the report shows a dense crowd of monks, laypeople and officials pressed together in daylight, with uniformed police officers present at the edge of the group — a detail the written report does not mention.

Day nine of the protest

The protest has been under court restriction for most of the past week. The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court issued an order restricting the monks from occupying the area near the Buddha statue in the park, and on 23 October it rejected a motion seeking to withdraw that order. A day earlier the court had ordered the group to vacate the site.

Gnanasara Thera is serving a sentence after the Supreme Court invalidated the presidential pardon granted to him. Earlier this week an Extraordinary Gazette amended prison Standing Orders governing how an imprisoned monk’s robes are handled.
