Three separate incidents in the hill country on Monday turned the day’s landslide warnings into damage on the ground: an earth slope collapsed onto parked buses at the Hatton private bus stand, large boulders closed a road at Mawanella, and estate houses were submerged at Bogawantalawa.

No injuries are reported in any of the three.

Hatton: a slope comes down on parked buses

An earth mound behind the Hatton private bus stand collapsed onto two private buses that were parked waiting for their departure time, Hiru News reported at 9.38 p.m. Colombo time.

Workers at the bus stand said the slope behind the two buses came down at about 3.30 p.m. on Monday, amid the heavy rain over the Hatton area. Timekeepers at the stand then moved the other buses parked nearby away from the slope.

The filing does not say whether anyone was aboard either bus, and reports no injuries.

Mawanella: boulders close the Mahanthegama road

At Mawanella, in the Kegalle district, large boulders rolled onto the Mahanthegama road, halting traffic on it completely, Hiru reported at 6.01 p.m.

Mawanella Divisional Secretary Wijayani Rathnasekara said a renewed landslide risk has emerged around Mahanthegama Kovil Kanda because of the torrential rain over Mawanella and the surrounding area. Residents living around the hill and nearby have been told to remain highly vigilant and to follow safety instructions.

The word “again” is doing real work here. Rathnasekara noted that landslides in the Mawanella divisional secretariat division during the bad weather brought by Cyclone Ditwah last year cost a large number of people their homes. The same slopes are now being watched.

Bogawantalawa: estate houses under water

At Bogawantalawa, heavy rain caused the Kesselgamu Oya to overflow on Monday, submerging a number of low-lying areas, Hiru reported at 8.54 p.m., citing its correspondent.

Rainwater running down from the Kotiyagala estate into the same stream, combined with the overflow, flooded a number of estate houses in the low-lying parts of the estate.

Where this sits in the day’s warnings

All three incidents fall inside areas already under warning. Hatton and Bogawantalawa are both in the Nuwara Eliya district, where the National Building Research Organisation issued a landslide red notice for the Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood divisional secretariat divisions on Monday evening — covered in this desk’s report on the reservoirs and the NBRO warnings, which also records the first landslide of the spell, at Ellepola on the Balangoda–Ratnapura road.

Mawanella is the exception: Kegalle district was placed at Level 2 — “be alert” — in Monday afternoon’s NBRO warning, not at Level 3 or under a red notice. The boulder fall and the divisional secretary’s warning both come from a district that was on the lower tier of the scale.

Schools across the island are closed on Tuesday because of the weather.

What is not established

Hiru is the only verified newsroom to have filed on any of these three incidents at the time of writing; the Daily Mirror’s breaking-news rail carried no report of them. None of the three filings has been independently corroborated.

No filing gives a casualty count, states whether anyone was in or near the buses at Hatton, or says how many estate houses were flooded at Bogawantalawa or whether any family has been displaced. Hiru does not say whether the Disaster Management Centre has recorded any of the three, whether the Mahanthegama road has since been cleared, or how long it is expected to stay shut. No damage estimate is given for the buses.

Hiru’s English slug renders Bogawantalawa as “Bhagwanthalawa”; this report uses the standard English form.
