A woman who had been married about four months died after suddenly collapsing beside a hotel room door in the Jhansi area of Uttar Pradesh, India. Her relatives have alleged murder; police say they are investigating the allegation and that the cause of death will be established by the post-mortem report.

The woman, named as Muskan, was 28, Hiru News reported at 11.54 p.m. Colombo time on Monday. She had been staying at the hotel with her husband, Nilesh.

The incident took place in India. It has no reported connection to Sri Lanka.

What the CCTV shows

The collapse was captured by the hotel’s closed-circuit cameras, and a 47-second clip has since circulated on social media.

It shows three people walking along a hotel corridor towards the room. Two of them, the husband among them, go in first. Muskan, following behind, falls to the ground as she reaches the doorway. The footage then shows her husband picking her up and carrying her inside.

She was taken to hospital immediately. Hospital staff said she was already dead when she arrived.

The allegation and the investigation

Relatives of the dead woman say she was murdered. Police said they are investigating that allegation, and that the cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is received.

No cause of death has been established, and the filing reports no charge against anyone.

Sourcing and what remains unverified

This report is single-sourced. The incident was carried by Hiru News in Sinhala, which did not name the outlet it drew on. No newsroom on this desk’s verified list — which includes The Hindu, the Indian Express and NDTV among Indian outlets — had filed on it at the time of writing, and each was searched for directly.

A number of other Indian outlets have published fuller accounts, among them The Tribune, The Daily Pioneer, Asianet and News24. None of them is a verified newsroom for this desk, so their additional details are not relied on here. Those accounts variously place the death at a named Jhansi hotel on 25 October, report that the husband has been detained for questioning, attribute to the woman’s father an allegation that his son-in-law concealed an existing marriage, and quote a police officer saying the footage shows her falling after a slip. None of that is confirmed by the verified source above, and it should not be read as established.

Those same accounts also give her age as 26, against the 28 reported by Hiru. The discrepancy is unresolved; this report uses the figure from the verified source.

Not reported

Hiru’s filing does not give the date or time of the death, name the hotel, name the police station or officer handling the case, say whether anyone has been detained, or state what injuries — if any — were found. It does not give the woman’s full name or her husband’s, say where either is from, or indicate when the post-mortem result is expected. It reports no response from the husband or his family to the allegation.
