The body of a 16-year-old student from a leading national school in Horana, reported missing after he left home saying he was attending an Ordinary Level seminar, washed ashore at Egodauyana beach in Moratuwa on Monday.
Hiru News reported the discovery on Tuesday morning. The student has been named as Miyuru Nimsara, a resident of the Meewanapalana, Dambara area. He was due to sit this year’s G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination.
The sequence
On Saturday 25 October he told his family he was going to a seminar connected with the O/L examination, and left the house. He did not return.
After he failed to come home, relatives lodged a complaint with police on Monday 26 October. While officers were investigating that complaint, information reached them that a body had washed ashore on the beach at Egodauyana, Moratuwa. On examination, police confirmed it was the missing student.
Why police are treating it as suspicious
Two details in the police account are doing the work.
When the body was found, he was still wearing the clothes he had on when he left home — not swimwear, and not a change of clothes.
And police say no information has emerged to indicate he had gone into the sea to swim. On that basis, the manner of death is being treated as suspicious rather than as an accidental drowning.
Egodauyana lies on the coast at Moratuwa, some distance from his home in the Horana area. The filing does not say where the seminar he named was to be held, so no inference can be drawn about whether the beach lay on his route.
Not reported
The filing does not name the school or the police division handling the investigation. It does not give a cause of death, say whether a post-mortem has been held or scheduled, or state whether a magistrate has visited the scene. It does not say whether the seminar he named actually took place, or whether he was ever seen there.
It gives no time of death, no account of his movements between Saturday and Monday, and reports no arrests. Nothing in the filing identifies a suspect or a theory beyond the police description of the death as being in doubt.
A single outlet has carried this story. Searches of other verified newsrooms returned no independent account, so every detail above rests on the Hiru News filing alone, and the suspicious-death characterisation is the police’s as relayed by that outlet.
No image has been used. The only available photograph was the source outlet’s, which carries its watermark, and this desk does not publish imagery of a deceased minor.
