A Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter is due to join the search on Wednesday morning for three fishermen missing off Pudumathalan, Mullaitivu, after rough seas hampered the search at sea. The men have been missing since Monday morning.
Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar said the helicopter would join the operation on the morning of 28 October, the Daily Mirror reported at 9.51 p.m. Colombo time. Hiru News reported the same request for Air Force assistance at 9.55 p.m.
The men
The three left for fishing aboard boat No. MLT/1742 at around 7.30 a.m. on 26 October and have not returned. The Daily Mirror names them as:
- Antony Jude, 26, of Ambalavanpokkanai, Mullaitivu
- Sri Pushparaja, 42, of Jaffna
- Muhammed Rizwan, 48, of Mannar
The three come from three different districts across the north — a composition the filings do not comment on, but one that is ordinary in northern fisheries, where crews are assembled across communities and boats work out of ports away from their owners’ home districts.
What each outlet adds
The two accounts agree on the core facts and each carries something the other does not.
Hiru reports that the men went missing together with the vessel they travelled in — that is, the boat has not been found either. The Daily Mirror gives the registration but does not say whether the boat has been recovered. A missing crew with a missing boat is a materially different search from a recovered boat with a missing crew, and Hiru’s detail settles which this is.
Hiru also reports that local fishermen are searching alongside the Navy, not just the Navy alone. The Daily Mirror’s account describes the official effort only.
The Daily Mirror supplies the names, ages, home towns, the boat registration, the departure time and the minister’s instruction. Hiru supplies neither names nor the registration.
The weather
The search at sea has been hampered by adverse weather, which is the reason given for bringing in an aircraft.
That is consistent with conditions in the surrounding days. Hiru’s own Tuesday reporting warned of a risk of rough seas around the country as Cyclone Arnab moved towards India, with wind speeds increasing to 80–150 kmph. This desk has tracked the system as it intensified to a very severe cyclonic storm ahead of landfall in Andhra Pradesh.
Neither filing states that the cyclone caused the disappearance, and this report does not assert it. The men left port on Monday morning; the connection between the weather system and their disappearance is not established in either account, and only the hampering of the search is directly attributed to conditions at sea.
What the minister did
Following reports of the incident, Minister Chandrasekar instructed officials to take immediate action to locate the men and ensure their safe recovery. The Air Force request followed.
Not reported
Neither filing says how long the three had been expected to be at sea, whether the boat carried communications equipment, or when contact was last made. Neither says how far offshore the vessel was operating or what area the search covers.
Neither reports whether a distress signal was received, who raised the alarm, or at what point on Monday or Tuesday the men were declared missing. Neither says how many Navy craft are involved, or whether the Indian Coast Guard has been notified — relevant because Pudumathalan lies on the northeastern coast within reach of the maritime boundary.
Neither gives the families’ account, and neither reports whether the fishermen are from the same boat-owner or cooperative.
This is a developing situation. The search was continuing when both filings were published, and the Air Force component had not yet begun. This report will be updated when the outcome is reported.
