A man whom villagers seized on suspicion of theft and handed over to Kobeigane police has died after being admitted to hospital at Nikaweratiya. Four villagers have been arrested over an alleged assault on him.

Hiru News reported at 10.32 p.m. Colombo time that the man β€” described only as a young man said to have come to commit a theft β€” was caught by a group of villagers, handed over to Kobeigane police, and died after being admitted to the hospital at Nikaweratiya.

A senior police officer told the broadcaster that the villagers had assaulted the suspect.

Hiru put the matter to the Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, who said four villagers have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting the man.

What remains unestablished

The filing does not establish the sequence or the timing. It does not say when the man was seized, when he was handed to police, how long he was held before he was taken to hospital, or when he died. That interval is the central question in a death that follows both a reported assault and a transfer into police custody, and no citable filing answers it.

Also unreported: the man’s name and age, what he was alleged to have stolen, the cause of death, whether a post-mortem has been ordered, and whether he was examined by a medical officer before admission. He was a suspect; no allegation against him has been tested in court.

A note on sourcing. Ada Derana has also filed on this case, under a headline that characterises it as a death in police custody β€” a materially different framing from the account above. That filing could not be retrieved: adaderana.lk has returned a CloudFront 403 to this desk for 47 consecutive days, on both direct and proxy routes. It is therefore not cited here, and the custody question stays open rather than being reported either way. No other verified newsroom β€” Daily Mirror, NewsFirst or Colombo Gazette β€” had filed on the case at the time of writing.
