The Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force have begun a joint search and rescue operation for a fishing boat carrying four men that went missing after putting to sea from Kudawella. A Navy spokesman said the vessel sailed on 21 October — a week before the search was reported.
Hiru News reported the operation at 9.21 a.m. Colombo time on Wednesday, attributing it to a Sri Lanka Navy spokesman. Its account runs to three sentences.
The departure date matters
The boat left port on 21 October. The next day, the Daily Mirror reported that fishing and naval communities had been warned of the developing low-pressure system that became Cyclone Arnab. By Monday fishermen were being told to stay away from the sea, and the system reached very severe cyclonic storm strength before making landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.
The vessel was therefore already at sea when the first advisories went out. Hiru does not link the weather to the disappearance, and this report does not assert it.
Not the Mullaitivu case
This is a separate incident from the search for three fishermen missing off Pudumathalan, Mullaitivu, who sailed aboard boat No. MLT/1742 on 26 October. Different coast, crew size and sailing date — but both searches involve Navy and Air Force assets, which makes them easy to conflate.
Where Kudawella is
Hiru places Kudawella in Matara. The village and its fishery harbour lie in the Tangalle division of the Hambantota District, on the Matara border; this desk has previously reported it as a Tangalle-area harbour. Ada Derana’s headline names no district at all. The discrepancy is noted, not resolved.
Not reported
Hiru gives no registration number, no names or ages, and no home districts for the four men. It does not say how far offshore the boat was working, when contact was last made, whether a distress signal was received, or who raised the alarm.
Nor does it explain the gap between the 21 October sailing and Wednesday’s report — whether this was a multi-day trip of expected length, or when the boat was declared overdue. No search area, vessel or aircraft numbers, or family account is given.
Ada Derana also filed, under “Search launched for four missing fishermen off Kudawella Coast”, independently matching the crew size and location. Its report could not be dated — the site still returns a CloudFront block to this desk — so it is named here rather than cited. Neither the Daily Mirror nor NewsFirst had filed at the time of writing, and the Navy’s own news site carried no statement.
