A 70-year-old man was killed and four people were injured, among them a child of about eight, when a passenger bus and a three-wheeler collided head-on near the four-kilometre post on the Monaragala–Wedikumbura road on Wednesday morning.
The dead man was a resident of the Aliyawatta area, Hiru News reported at 7.46 a.m.
Four people were seriously injured, including the child, and have been admitted to Monaragala District General Hospital.
The three-wheeler was travelling from Monaragala towards Wedikumbura, and the bus was coming from Wedikumbura towards Monaragala carrying passengers. The Monaragala traffic division is conducting further investigations.
What the scene shows
Photography of the crash site published with the Sinhala filing shows the two vehicles still where they came to rest, and it bears on how the casualties fell.
The bus — a red and white private service lettered “B.K.N.D. Super Line” — is upright and structurally intact, with damage confined to the lower front of its nearside. The three-wheeler is wedged against that corner, destroyed at the front, its canopy torn back and its cab collapsed. Debris is scattered across the carriageway.
That asymmetry explains the casualty pattern without needing an account of it. Every reported casualty was in the three-wheeler; no bus passenger is reported hurt. In a head-on impact between a full-size bus and a three-wheeler, almost all of the energy is absorbed by the smaller vehicle, which has no crumple structure and no restraint system around its occupants.
The road itself is a narrow two-lane stretch with a rock cutting and dense vegetation close against one side, and no shoulder to speak of — the kind of alignment that leaves a driver nowhere to go once a vehicle crosses the centre line.
Not reported
No filing says what caused the collision, or which vehicle crossed into the other’s path. The dead man is not named, and it is not reported whether he was the three-wheeler’s driver or a passenger, or whether the injured are members of one family.
Nothing is published on the condition of the four injured beyond “serious”, on the number of passengers aboard the bus, on the weather or road surface at the time, or on whether anyone has been arrested. The bus operator has not commented.
Context: rain and a standing police warning
The crash comes a day after police issued a road safety warning for rainy weather, which this desk reported on Tuesday, during a spell in which heavy rain has been falling across much of the island under the influence of Cyclone Arnab. The Department of Meteorology said on Wednesday morning that showers were still expected in several provinces as the system’s impact eased.
No filing attributes this collision to road conditions, and this desk is not doing so either. The warning is recorded as the context in which the week’s driving is taking place, not as a cause.
On sourcing
This account rests on one verified newsroom. The crash was filed at 7.46 a.m. Colombo time, and no other verified outlet this desk can date had reported it at the time of writing — the Daily Mirror’s breaking-news listing had not reached Wednesday’s filings.
The accompanying photograph is carried by Hiru News under an edge-to-edge watermark and has therefore not been republished here; it is described above because what it shows is reportable.
