The Colombo High Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for possessing and trafficking 24 grammes of heroin, NewsFirst reported on Thursday.

The verdict was delivered by High Court Judge Buddhika C. Ragala following what the outlet described as a lengthy trial.

The accused was arrested in 2022 with the heroin during a police raid in the Mutwal area of Colombo. The Attorney General subsequently filed indictments against him.

Delivering the verdict, the judge said the prosecution had proven the charges beyond reasonable doubt, and the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Context

The case took roughly four years to move from arrest to verdict.

Judge Ragala also presided over a separate, unrelated matter reported the same day, in which bail was refused to the suspect known as β€œHarak Kata”. The two cases involve different defendants and are not connected.
