Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair gate staff at Dublin Airport of treating him and his family in a discriminatory and threatening manner, in a post on X that has drawn wide attention.

Sangakkara asked whether other passengers had experienced the same thing, describing the episode as shocking and saying it was his first bad experience in Dublin.

What he said

In the post, Sangakkara wrote:

“Has anyone experienced discriminatory gate personnel @Ryanair in Dublin? I with my family just did and it was shocking. The tone of address and the mishandling of procedure and threatening behavior. Unacceptable for any passenger. First bad experience in Dublin”

He singled out three things: the tone in which staff addressed them, the mishandling of procedure, and what he called threatening behaviour. Hiru News carried the same account, translated into Sinhala, and its rendering matches Daily Mirror’s English on every point.

Neither outlet reports which flight or route was involved, what the procedural dispute concerned, or whether Sangakkara and his family were allowed to travel.

Who he is

Sangakkara is one of the leading batters in the game’s history and captained Sri Lanka across formats. He remains active in the administration of the Sri Lankan game: he sits on the Cricket Transformation Committee chaired by Eran Wickramaratne, alongside Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny, which was appointed in April to overhaul Sri Lanka Cricket.

He is among the most widely recognised Sri Lankans abroad, which is why a complaint of this kind from him travels further than the incident itself.

Not reported

Neither filing carries any response from Ryanair, from Dublin Airport or from its operator daa, and neither says whether Sangakkara has made a formal complaint to the airline or to any regulator. Neither reports the date or time of the incident; the post was made the previous evening, Sri Lanka time. No account states what the gate staff are said to have done procedurally, and the specific basis on which Sangakkara considers the treatment discriminatory is not spelled out in either report.

This desk has sought no comment from the airline and none of the sourced reports indicates that either outlet did.
