Water tariffs will not change until January, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe has said, according to News 1st.

The minister made the remarks while attending a function at a school in Tambuttegama.

He said charges for water supply are reviewed twice a year, and that the next review is scheduled for January 2027.

Any amendment at that point will depend on whether water purification costs have risen, the minister said, adding that those costs will be evaluated in January.

Context

The statement sets a floor on utility cost changes for households through the end of the year, at a time when other administered prices have been moving. Bread and bakery product prices rose by Rs 5 from midnight on October 30, and the government has said it intends to reduce taxes further in the 2027 budget.

A twice-yearly review cycle means the January assessment is a scheduled step rather than a response to a specific proposal, and the minister framed purification cost movements β€” not a general revenue target β€” as the trigger for any change.
