Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, the 2024 European 1500 metres champion, has died at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer.
A statement posted to her social media accounts said she died at 6.30am on Sunday (November 1) surrounded by her loved ones, describing her as a beloved daughter, sister and wife who had inspired many. She had disclosed the diagnosis in July 2025.
Born in Portaferry, Co Down, Mageean represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games over 1500m. She was forced to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Games with an Achilles injury.
Her first major title came at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, where she took 1500m gold. She had earlier won European bronze in 2016 and silver in 2022, and claimed a 1500m silver for Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Her death came only weeks after she married her long-term partner in Belfast.
The Olympic Federation of Ireland said the country “has lost a hero”. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill praised her “warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character”, and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was deeply saddened by her untimely passing.
Hiru News, relaying BBC reporting, carried the death in Sri Lanka and placed the cancer diagnosis in May 2025 rather than July. Al Jazeera’s account of July is followed here.
