A 27-year-old inmate has been shot dead by prison security personnel at Dumbara Prison after allegedly attempting to escape, two verified newsrooms reported on Sunday night.

The Prisons Media Spokesperson confirmed the death. The man who died was a resident of Galagedara, in the Kandy district.

Hiru News filed the report at 9.23 p.m. Colombo time, saying the inmate died in gunfire directed by the prison’s security unit after trying to flee. The Daily Mirror followed ten minutes later under a Colombo dateline, reporting that he “was shot dead by prison security personnel after allegedly attempting to escape.”

The two accounts agree on every published fact: the age, the cause of death, the facility, the confirming official and the dead man’s home area.

One wording difference worth noting

Hiru’s headline attributes the shooting to prison officers; the body of the same filing attributes it to the prison security unit, and the Daily Mirror says prison security personnel. These are compatible descriptions rather than competing ones, but no filing identifies who fired, how many officers were involved, or how many shots were fired.

Which facility

Neither filing names the specific institution. “Dumbara” covers more than one: this desk’s September reporting on prison officers’ pay recorded a joint emergency mechanism spanning the Dumbara-Bogambara Prison and the Pallekele Open Prison. Hiru’s own file photograph of the institution carries trilingual signage reading Bogambara Prison, Dumbara, which points to that facility — though a stock image is not a statement of fact by the newsroom, and this desk is not treating it as one.

Not reported

The dead man has not been named, and neither filing says whether he was a convicted prisoner or a remand detainee, or what he was being held for.

No account reports the time of the incident, whether warning shots were fired first, whether he was alone or part of a group attempting to flee, or how far he had got. Neither says whether a magistrate’s inquest has been opened, whether the officers involved have been suspended pending inquiry, or whether the Human Rights Commission has been notified — the standard steps after a death caused by state officers.
