A girl aged one year and four months has died after falling into a fish tank in front of a house in the Koththanthiv area of the Udappuwa police division, police say.
The child fell on Saturday, Hiru News reported at 11:09 a.m. Colombo time on Sunday.
She was admitted to Koththanthiv Hospital after the incident and died there, according to Udappuwa Police. The child was a resident of Periyapaduwa, Koththanthiv, in the Puttalam district.
Her body has been placed in the mortuary at Puttalam Hospital. Udappuwa Police are conducting further investigations.
A note on the child’s age
Hiru’s headline and its English URL slug both describe the child as one and a half years old. The body of the same filing states her age as one year and four months. This article follows the body text, which is the more specific of the two and is the figure attributed to the police account.
What the fish tank was
The Sinhala term used in the filing, මාළු ටැංකිය, refers to an ornamental fish tank or pond at a residence rather than a commercial aquarium. The photograph published with the report shows a built garden pond of the kind found outside homes — a low masonry surround at roughly ground level, open at the top.
Not reported
The filing does not say what time the fall occurred, whether anyone witnessed it, or how long the child was in the water before she was found. It does not describe the depth of the tank or whether it was covered or fenced. It does not state the cause of death or whether a post-mortem examination has been ordered, and it does not say whether the investigation is treating the death as an accident.
