A 21-year-old man has been arrested by the Unawatuna Tourist Police Bureau over the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old French woman at Rumassala Jungle Beach in Galle.

Officers acted on information received immediately after the incident, Hiru News reported at 11:17 a.m. Colombo time on Sunday.

A team led by the officer-in-charge, Amila Priyankara, responded to the report and made the arrest.

After initial investigations were carried out and the woman’s safety was secured, the suspect was handed over to Habaraduwa Police for further investigation and legal proceedings. He was due to be produced before court on Sunday.

A detail that is attributed two different ways

Hiru’s Sinhala text places the French woman as having travelled to Unawatuna from the Ragama area for a trip. Other Sri Lankan outlets carrying the same police account attach Ragama to the suspect, describing him as a Ragama resident who had travelled to the area.

The two readings cannot both be right, and this desk could not resolve them against a second verified newsroom. The detail is recorded here as contested rather than stated as fact. Nothing else in the account turns on it.

Context

Jungle Beach sits on the Rumassala headland near Unawatuna, one of the busiest stretches of the southern coast for foreign visitors. Hiru’s own headline frames the case in reputational terms, describing the incident as blackening a site that has won recognition as a tourist attraction.

Tourist safety on the southern coast has drawn repeated official attention. The Tourism Minister called for urgent policing of tourist areas in earlier reporting, and this desk has covered a series of cases in the Galle district involving foreign visitors.

Not reported

The filing does not say when the incident occurred, where the suspect was arrested, or what charges he faces. It does not name the court, say whether bail was opposed, or state the suspect’s occupation or whether he worked in the tourism trade. It does not say whether the woman required medical attention, whether she has given a formal statement, or whether the French embassy has been notified.

This report rests on a single source. The suspect has not been convicted of any offence and is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
