A fire destroyed both floors of a well-known cosmetics shop in Kiribathgoda town on Monday evening. No one was hurt.

The blaze broke out at about 5.00 p.m., Hiru News reported. The upper and lower floors of the premises were completely destroyed.

People inside were evacuated immediately as the fire took hold, and the broadcaster’s correspondent reported no deaths and no injuries.

Two fire engines from the Colombo Municipal Council’s fire unit were dispatched to the scene. The fire has now been fully brought under control, following an operation carried out by firefighters together with area residents.

Cause

Kiribathgoda Police suspect an electrical fault — a current leak — caused the fire. Police are conducting further investigations.

No figure has been put on the value of the stock or property lost, and the filing does not name the business or say whether neighbouring premises were affected.

A note on what burned

Hiru’s English headline and URL describe the premises as a “beauty salon”. The Sinhala report says රූපලාවණ්‍ය භාණ්ඩ අලෙවිසලක් — a cosmetics goods outlet, that is, a retail shop selling beauty products rather than a salon providing treatments. The outlet’s own Sinhala headline uses the same word, අලෙවිසල (sales outlet).

This article follows the Sinhala. The distinction matters: a retail outlet stocked with aerosols, solvents and alcohol-based products is a materially different fire risk from a premises offering services, and it changes who was likely to have been inside at 5 p.m.

Readers should also note that shop fires in Kiribathgoda town form a recurring headline family — the Daily Mirror has previously reported a textile shop fire in the same town, and a separate 2025 fire affected a shoe retailer there. Those are distinct events from Monday’s.

Not reported. The filing does not say how many fire crews in total attended, how long the fire burned, whether the building was insured, or why a Colombo Municipal Council unit responded to a fire in Kiribathgoda, which lies in the Gampaha district.
