US President Donald Trump has again said the war with Iran will end “very soon, one way or the other”, while shipping in the Strait of Hormuz came under fresh attack and Iran’s Supreme Leader warned that any renewed strikes would be answered without geographical limits.
Trump said Tehran will either make a deal or “we’ll just end it”, Al Jazeera reported. Speaking separately at a Halloween event, he said he was “in no hurry” with Iran.
This is a line Trump has used before
Al Jazeera’s own headline notes Trump said it “again”. He made near-identical statements in March 2026 and September 2026, when he said the war would end “immediately” after the US midterm elections. The repetition is itself part of the story: the statement has not so far been followed by an end to the fighting, and readers should treat it as a restated position rather than a new development.
Tankers hit in the strait
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two crude oil tankers caught fire after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz. A Qatari LNG carrier was struck on Friday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with mediators over a two-day plan to reopen the strait were ongoing, and said he hoped Washington had “enough sense to choose diplomacy”.
Iran’s warning
Hiru News reported on Monday that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the United States and Israel against restarting the war, saying that if fighting resumed there would be no geographical limits on Iran’s strikes.
Hiru also reported Trump as saying one or two targets in Iran still require attention, including a suspected nuclear facility. That detail appears in the Hiru filing and is attributed here to Hiru alone — it does not appear in the Al Jazeera live coverage consulted for this report.
Mojtaba Khamenei became Supreme Leader after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in US-Israeli strikes at the start of the war in February.
Not reported
Neither source gives the flag, operator or crew status of the two tankers that caught fire, or casualty figures from those incidents. The mediating parties are not named, and no date is given for a resumption of direct talks. Trump’s remarks are not tied to a specific venue or press event beyond the Halloween reference.
